When you book in for your first session I will begin by sending you a brief questionnaire to fill in and send back. You will also get a video link that will give you a demonstration of a typical hypnosis session, so you can begin to familiarise yourself with the process. During the first session we will go through what you are looking to achieve, explore a bit of your past history and then we will set some goals so that we can plan your session(s). There will be plenty of time through out to ask any questions as well as for me to share some snippets of education about how your mind works and also about the problem/goal you are looking to work on.
When you are ready we will begin with the hypnosis work and show you how powerful your mind can be and how you can harness it to create the change you are looking for. At the end of the session it is likely that we will chat through and (hopefully) agree on some home work that you can take away and explore to continue the work out of the session. The home work is a way to empower you and to progress the work we do together (as well as reducing the number of sessions you will need!)
Certain conditions such as bipolar, severe depression, psychosis, schizophrenia and dementia would be considered contraindications to hypnosis, however other talking therapies such as REBT and ACT can all be helpful in your session.
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that you will already be experiencing multiple times a day. Its a state of focused awareness, where you can push aside the judging, analysing part of your conscious mind and create a state of heightened suggestibility which allows you to make profound changes. Have you have ever driven somewhere and arrived at your destination safely with no memory of the journey in between…? Then congratulations, you have already enjoyed a naturally occurring hypnotic trance!
If you have ever day dreamed then you already have. It is true that some people find it easier than others, but just like a muscle, the more you train it the better you can become.
A couple of top tips:
- If you want it to work for you it will. If you question your skill or try to prove that you can not be hypnotised then you wont be. All hypnosis is after all a form of self hypnosis so your mind set is key.
- Use your imagination not your will power. Will power is a conscious effort where as imagination is the language of the subconscious. For instance if you imagine becoming relaxed it is a lot easier than trying to will yourself to become relaxed.
- Enjoy the process and don’t over analyse it. Be in the moment and just observe it as it unfolds and enjoy.
Hypnosis is different for every one, so it is hard to accurately predict. Many report that it is a kind of wonderfully relaxed yet focused state of awareness. Remember it is a normal state that we naturally visit every day so expect a sense of familiarity to your trance and not to feel “hypnotised” or “zonked out”. You will be able to notice everything that is going on around you, but it will not bother you as you just continue to focus on everything that is said and everything that you are processing inside.
During the whole hypnosis process you are in charge and you will only adopt the suggestions that fit with your beliefs and values. For instance if I asked you to stand up and it was OK, you probably would, but if I asked you to rob a bank you would not (I hope!) Its exactly the same in hypnosis. You will only choose to share the things you want to share and do the things you want to do.
You are always in control. No one has ever got stuck in trance, however it has been know for the occasional client to enjoy it so much they want to stay there a bit longer…a bit like hitting the snooze button in the morning and having an extra 5 minutes. Ever had that feeling?
Although it is usual for hypnotists to use the word sleep, Hypnosis is very much a focused state where together we can work and make changes. Some clients have come in to their first session expecting hypnosis to be sleep and to be unconscious through out, however as lovely as that might feel, that focused state vanishes as soon as the ZZZZZs arrive. Expect to be engaged through out.
You can reposition yourself and even have an appropriate scratch where necessary! Being comfortable will allow you to go even deeper into your trance work and will not bring you out as some people worry. There may be times when I ask you to speak or move, again this will only deepen your experience.
